UTG

PositionAliases: UTG, 枪口位, 前位, under the gun

UTG (under the gun) is the first seat to act preflop. Tightest range, highest 3bet probability — the position beginners most easily over-play.

UTG (under the gun) literally means "under the gun" and refers to the player who acts first preflop (the seat immediately after the big blind). In 6-max games, UTG is effectively the earliest position (EP); in 9-max games, UTG is at the head of EP, followed by UTG+1 and UTG+2.

Detailed Explanation

UTG is the toughest position in poker:

  1. Most players left to act: in 6-max, 5 opponents remain, each able to 3bet
  2. Range must be tightest: weak opens lose money — 5 potential counter-attackers
  3. High probability of being OOP postflop: after BTN or SB calls, you're OOP postflop

Standard 6-max UTG open range ~10%:

  • Pairs: 88+
  • Suited: AJs+, KQs (with some KJs / QJs / JTs / T9s)
  • Offsuit: AQo+

Response to 3bets:

  • Very narrow value 4bet range: QQ+, AK
  • Call 3bet range: JJ-99, AQs, AJs, KQs (postflop playable)
  • Fold range: all marginal hands (88, AJo, etc.)

Common Use Cases

  • 6-max cash: UTG = EP, tightness is default
  • 9-max cash: UTG+1 and UTG+2 follow UTG, ranges tighter still
  • Mid-to-late tournament: as the field shrinks, the "EP penalty" weakens
  • Beginner mistake: opening ATo / KJo / 87s from UTG is a stable long-term loss
